Promote a psychological rehabilitation process for onco-haematological patients, to feel better in everyday life and enter into a relationship with themselves and their experiences. This is the objective of ‘sAil Camp’, a psychological rehabilitation project promoted by the Italian Association against Leukemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma and aimed at haematological-oncology patients throughout Italy, mainly through sailing therapy activities. , wanted by the Ail section of Brescia and the Ail national headquarters in collaboration with Univela Campione del Garda as an opportunity to compare with others, to try to strengthen the sense of mastery and autonomy. The diagnosis of an onco-haematological disease represents one of the most impactful and destabilizing events that a person can face in their lifetime. The aim of the initiative is to offer 40 patients in follow-up to spend two days in the splendid setting of Campione del Garda (Brescia) to find a new psycho-physical balance thanks to the support of a multidisciplinary team made up of doctors, nurses, psychologists and nutritionists who will establish a relationship of trust and complicity with them. It is no coincidence that “sAil Camp wants to offer a welcoming and protected place to provide stimuli that can constitute an opportunity to start returning to normality according to one’s own pace and habits”, says Alessia Rosito, Ail Brescia psychologist.
Patients – reports a note – will have the opportunity to live 2 days in contact with nature. Sports and laboratory activities will be proposed, and a sailing trip will be organized that allows the patient to metaphorically take back the helm of his life and a walking route that allows him to get back on the road. The project will be carried out in a residential manner, is open to patients from all over Italy in follow-up and will develop over 4 weekends in Campione del Garda: 25-26 May; June 15-16; July 27-28; 14-15 September. Each weekend will see the participation of 8-10 patients. “An uncontaminated nature, a healthy sport like sailing which is suitable for any age – declares Giuseppe Navoni, president of Ail Brescia and national vice-president of Ail – are therapeutic elements useful for the psychological rehabilitation of onco-haematological patients”.
The “sAil Camp project was created to promote psychological rehabilitation. The boat trip is a moment in which patients have the opportunity to relax, try a new experience and be in the open air – underline Elisa Navoni and Davide Gandaglia, both biologists nutritionists – By carrying out this project too, it was understood how important it was to take care of patients’ health at 360 degrees, also starting from eating habits. An absolutely current topic is that linked to the world of diets, which is increasingly complex and very often contradictory In this context of attention to the lifestyle in its entirety, meetings with nutritional biologists were also included aimed at clarifying some concepts of nutritional education to patients, with the aim of providing the tools and notions suitable for cultivating nutrition. one’s health starting from nutrition”.
The experience of one participant was touching: “Going on a sailing boat was like challenging the wind and feeling free and at peace – she says – The beauty of the lake, the mountains, the depth of the sky, breakfast in company outdoors with the sun that warms your heart, the laughter, the carefreeness, the walks in the middle of nature. All this made me understand that even those who are experiencing dark moments can have the opportunity to experience a piece of happiness. I saw in the group the desire that this experience could alleviate at least in part the suffering of the mind and heart in people who suddenly had to deal with an unexpected illness, which upset their lives, bringing with it, at the end of the 3 days spent together, the awareness that the important thing is to understand and make people feel that even in pain they are not alone”.
Ail has been alongside hematological patients and supporting scientific research on blood cancers for 55 years. Today it is present throughout the national territory with 83 provincial sections.
