The beloved and acclaimed Mexican director, screenwriter, producer and novelist, William of the Bull, will release, along with Netflix, its own version of “Pinocchio”, one of the most iconic characters in universal literature. It is a stop-motion animated musical film in the dark fantasy genre.
The filmmaker from Guadalajara, Jalisco, reinvents the classic story of the Italian journalist and writer Carlo Collodi, about the wooden puppet that magically comes to life to heal the heart of a sad carpenter. “This fabulous stop-motion animated musical, directed by Guillermo del Toro and Mark Gustafson, follows the mischievous adventures of Pinocchio as he tries to find his place in the world,” previously reported. Netflix through a statement.
Now, as part of “Tudum 2022”Netflix’s global event (where previews and all kinds of news about the projects the company is working on are shown), Guillermo del Toro presented an extraordinary behind-the-scenes look at his “Pinocchio”showing how each of the animations in his new movie were made, which will have its premiere in some theaters in November, while on the streaming platform in December.
Visibly excited about the process of animating “Pinocchio”, a project I’ve been looking forward to for several yearstakes a tour of the place where he created his own version of this classic story, speaking in turn about the dominance of puppets at work, with his team in collaboration with Henson Studios.
To me, there’s a valuable difference between stop-motion as an art form and digital, stop-motion in the early days, when you had the flicker of skin and fabric, even the atmospheric dust on sets and the imperfection , it was so beautiful to see because it told you how the thing was done.
The Oscar winner for “Best Director” and “Best Film” for “The Shape of Water”expressed that he really wanted this film to land in a way that had the expressiveness and material nature of a piece of handmade animation and a beautiful artisan exercise of carving, painting and sculpture, “but it had the sophistication of movement to which the research on platforms and puppets has led us”.
Likewise, William of the Bull told about the use of puppets of different scales, which were used in certain scenes of the film, according to the needs.
“In terms of scale, we use different sizes of puppets for different needs, this is our ‘Pinocchio’ to interact with the cricket, to make it the right size, we need the cricket and ‘Pinocchio’ shoulder to talk to him, whisper to him to the ear, lie down close to it, and so we used this little cricket. And then in certain shots, we used this little ‘Pinocchio.'”

The film features a great cast, who gave their voices to the various characters: Gregory Mann (Pinocchio), David Bradley (Geppetto), Ewan McGregor (Sebastian J. Grillo) and more. “Pinocchio is a story that has lived for centuries, a fable that fell deep into my heart and we are certain that this incarnation is particularly beautiful,” said Guillermo del Toro.
