After a complicated debut season, Yuki Tsunoda wants to prove that he is really Formula 1 material. Last year the Japanese shone intermittently: perhaps the hopes placed in him by the experts after the great start in Bahrain were too high, perhaps – simply – Pierre Gasly proved to be superior (inflicting a gap of 80 points in the standings), the fact is that the # 22 got lost a bit over the course of the season. And several times made the track’s mouth talk more. After the year of apprenticeship, Tsunoda is loaded with a thousand, with the aim of giving a hard time to his teammate.
“Last year I didn’t feel physically prepared enough. So I’m focusing mainly on the form. At the same time, I returned to Japan for start from scratch mentally“Tsunoda said during the presentation of the AlphaTauri (relive it here). “I understood that Formula 1 is the most difficult category, not only for the level of driving, but also for all the mental and physical characteristics that you must have. The latter are the aspects that I perceived as weak. So I wanted to improve them over the winter to start strong from the first race in Bahrain“.
A few words also about the upcoming season, in which Tsunoda and the other 19 F1 drivers will put themselves to the test with the new generation of cars: “I already drove to the simulator two or three days ago. The feeling was similar to that of Abu Dhabi, but the 18-inch tires are very different from last year’s, which I have already experienced in F2, and there was a marked difference there too.“, The Japanese added. “What am I looking forward to? Overtaking! These cars were created primarily to increase overtaking opportunities in the race and to have cleaner air when chasing. Of course, for both spectators and us drivers, it will be better to have more battles and close fights on Sunday“.
