Ricciardo’s last race?
There was a very particular atmosphere at home throughout the weekend at Marina Bay Racing Bullslinked above all to the future of Daniel Ricciardo not only in the Faenza team, but even in Formula 1. The Singapore Grand Prix, in fact, could have been the last of the Australian’s career, and the 35-year-old’s emotions after the race indirectly confirmed the rumours that had also arisen on the eve of the Marina Bay round.
Driver of the Day and Fastest Lap
Ricciardo, winner of 8 races from 2011 to today, could in fact give way to the young Liam Lawson as early as the next GP of the Americas in Austin scheduled for the second half of October, even if there has not yet been any official confirmation on this matter. In the meantime, as further proof of what could be the real swan song, the Australian was voted as ‘Driver of the day’ by enthusiasts, in addition to having signed the fastest lap in the final stages of the race.
Only 18°
All this despite another colourless performance, closed at 18th place: “It was a tough race – explained the former Red Bull – After the unlucky qualifying on Saturday we knew we had to try something with our strategy. We started aggressively with the soft tyre and looked for an opportunity. It was a difficult race for overtaking, there were not many riders who made their way through the opposition. In the end, we were not fast enough and Yuki also finished the race outside the points. In the final laps we were able to do the fastest lap of the race and it was a pleasure to do it. It was really special to be voted by my fans as rider of the day”.
Tsunoda also out of the points zone
Ricciardo’s comment anticipated the disappointment for the 12th place final of Yuki-TsunodaThe Japanese, despite starting from eighth place on the grid, was unable to stop the Racing Bulls’ difficulties which have continued since the Dutch GP, the first of the last four races finished outside the points zone by both drivers: “The start was frustratingbecause unfortunately I was overtaken by some cars and I lost important positions – he declared – we extended the first stint as much as possible until lap 33 and with the Medium tyres it was quite difficult. In that situation, we were waiting for a Safety Car that could have given us a good opportunity, but it didn’t happen because the race went smoothly. Then we changed tyres, fitting the Softs. The last run was quite good and I felt better than when I was running on the Mediums, but the bad start was our main problem that prevented us from scoring points”.
