On Sunday, for the first time since 2014, a Japanese driver will take part in his home Grand Prix. Yuki Tsunoda in fact, he will be able to make his debut at the wheel of a Formula 1 car on the Suzuka track, which was not present in the world championship calendar last year, when the AlphaTauri standard bearer played his rookie season in the Circus. The 22-year-old from Sagamihara, who recently renewed his contract with AlphaTauri also for the 2023 season, is not having an easy time in terms of results. In Singapore, too, his race ended well before the checkered flag, after a braking error that led him to crash into one of the track’s walls.
The air of home, however, could do well for Tsunoda, who did not lose his famous irony arriving in Suzuka: “I will finally be able to eat Japanese food for a whole week“Joked the # 22 of the Faenza team. Tsunoda then recalled his passed into the Japanese minor categories: “I have often driven in Suzuka in Formula 4 – revealed – so i have some experience. But when I recently tested the track in the simulator with a Formula 1 car it felt like a very different world. Having a lot more downforce a Formula 1 is on the accelerator for most of the lap than a Formula 4. The view changes completely and the track itself looks very different. It feels like racing on another circuit“.
On the other hand, who is more accustomed to the Japanese track even at the wheel of the racing cars of the Circus is Pierre Gaslywhich in Suzuka has already run in the three-year period 2017-2018-2019. “Suzuka is an incredible track, especially the first sector with all the fast corners, and it is definitely one of my three favorite tracks. Also, being a Honda rider, it’s always a special feeling to be able to race in Japan in front of our fans. I was with Honda at the start of their last stint in F1, and even earlier when I raced with them in Super Formula – recalled the French – last time we were there, in 2019, I had a good weekend. I qualified ninth and finished seventh, so let’s see what we can do this time“.
