New York.- Former President Donald Trump said Sunday that he “doesn’t think” he will run for president again in 2028 if he loses his current bid to return to the White House in 2024.
“No, I don’t think so. I think that’s it,” Trump said when asked by journalist Sharyl Attkisson if he would run again.
It was a noteworthy statement because Trump appeared to rule out a fourth presidential bid and because he rarely acknowledges the possibility that he could legitimately lose an election. Trump typically insists that will only be possible if there is large-scale fraud — a false claim he made in 2020 and has preemptively re-uttered during his current campaign.
Trump would be 82 in 2028, a year older than President Joe Biden is currently. Biden dropped out of the race in July after a disastrous debate performance and after several months of being the target of criticism from Trump and other conservatives for being too old and having too erratic behavior for the office.
Attkisson interviewed Trump for his show “Full Measure.” During the 22-minute interview, Trump defended his performance during the coronavirus pandemic. He took credit for developing the COVID-19 vaccines manufactured during his presidency, though he also said, “They’re looking at the vaccines and we’re going to find out” if they’re safe.
Trump said Republicans have become skeptical of vaccines even though Democrats are confident in them.
His 2028 comment came toward the end of the interview, which also included a question about how Trump stays healthy. “I eat properly,” the former president replied, prompting a disbelieving reaction from Atkinson, who noted Trump’s love of burgers.
“Proper burgers,” the Republican said.
