The new president of the United States, Donald Trump, revealed this Wednesday the content of the handwritten letter that his predecessor, Joe Biden, left him in the Oval Office of the White House, complying with the tradition of recent decades. “May God bless and guide you as he has blessed and guided our beloved country since our founding,” reads the message signed by the Democrat.
“Dear President Trump“As I say goodbye to this sacred office, I wish you and your family all the best in the next four years,” the letter begins, according to Fox News, the Republican’s favorite network. “The American people – and the people of all the world – they hope that this house gives them stability in the inevitable storms of historyand my prayer is that the coming years will be times of prosperity, peace and grace for our nation,” the note continues.
The letter, dated January 20, 2025, the day of the Republican’s inauguration, was inside a on white with a 47referring to Trump’s presidential number. The new president found the envelope on Monday in a desk drawer while he was signing his first executive orders in front of several reporters, but he didn’t want to open it in front of journalists.
Asked on Tuesday about the content of the letter, Trump revealed that he had a “inspirational” tone. “I think it was a nice letter. I think he should let people see it because it was good for him to have written it. I appreciate it“he declared at a press conference.
This tradition was started in 1989 by the then outgoing president Ronald Reagan when he left a congratulatory message in the Oval Office for his successor, George H.W. Bushwho had been his vice president for eight years. Since then, all leaders have had this gesture, including Trump in 2021, despite the fact that he left the White House that year in the midst of false accusations of electoral fraud against his then successor and today predecessor, Joe Biden.
