Donald Trump wanted to amass votes this weekend and appeared at the national convention of the Libertarian Party in Washington to promote himself as the candidate they should support in the next presidential elections. Those attending the congress, whose purpose was precisely to appoint their own candidate, booed him with cries of “cheater”, “usurper” and “liar”, to which the Republican leader responded: “It seems like you don’t want to win.”
The Libertarian Party, whose postulates are close to the conservatives but more radical in some cases, only obtained 1.2% of ballots in 2020. However, Trump is trying to attract his supporters, convinced that every vote will be necessary in the elections. polls since the polls give him a very close tie with the current president, Joe Biden.
The atmosphere was the least similar to a tycoon rally. As a general rule, thousands of dedicated supporters attend each of their political celebrations, wait hours to gain access and burst into applause or laughter every time their idol makes a joke. Among libertarians he felt uncomfortable. It was a raucous event, full of people who shouted or engaged in competitions between those who applauded or booed the conservative leader. It is also true that this is the first time in American electoral history that a presidential candidate interferes in another party’s convention and asks its delegates to nominate him. More so in this case, libertarians are fixated on another controversial politician, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Trump not only made several promises to his militants if he reaches the White House, but he even guaranteed the appointment of a libertarian in his cabinet. A dream for a party that in 2016 reached its electoral ceiling with only 3% of American ballots in favor of it.
That the controversial politician appeared at an event belonging to another party was not the result of chance. Trump pressured his advisors and several relevant members of the Libertarian Party to be the chief guest at his national congress. What no one expected is that he himself would run indirectly to attract voters. In the end, it ended badly. He seemed impatient, launched a couple of hidden invectives at the audience and got off the stage with gestures of discomfort.
