Tropical mosquitoesincluding Culex pipiens found in the Northern Hemisphere, have been found in various locations in Scotland. This was revealed by research from the University of Glasgow which identified 16 types of mosquitoes that are prevalent in much warmer climates such as those of South America and Asia. The cause? Warmer temperatures may have led to more mosquitoes, including those from areas where they can transmit diseases, researchers say, from Dengue to the Zika virus. “If cold Scotland has a storm of mosquitoes it means that something is changing for the worse, it’s a bad, good sign,” he says to Adnkronos Salute Matteo Bassetti, director of infectious diseases at the San Martino polyclinic hospital in Genoa.
“A ruralization of cities is taking place, we used to find these mosquitoes in the countryside or in the plains where there were favorable environments, now we find them in the city: in Brazil the Dengue epidemic is in large metropolises like Sao Paulo – he recalls – Mosquitoes today they are present a lot in inhabited centers and Italian cities are in fact full of mosquitoes”.
“In this last week in Genoa we have had 4 cases of Dengue – he continues – all imported but there is an increase. Mosquitoes are a big problem and the high temperatures certainly don’t help”, concludes Bassetti.
