Session was suspended after a request from judge Marcello Granado; rapporteur Peterson Simão voted for the impeachment
O TRE-RJ (Regional Electoral Court of Rio de Janeiro) resumes this Thursday (May 23, 2024) the analysis of a request to revoke the mandate of the governor of Rio de Janeiro, Claudio Castro (PL), from the vice-governor, Thiago Pampolha (MDB), and the president of Alerj (Legislative Assembly of Rio de Janeiro), state deputy Rodrigo Bacellar (PL).
The trial, which began on Friday (May 17, 2024), had been suspended after Judge Marcello Granado’s request for a 10-day review (more time for analysis).
On the occasion, the rapporteur, judge Peterson Barroso Simão, voted to revoke the mandate and make the head of the state Executive ineligible for 8 years. He also voted for the impeachment of vice-governor Thiago Pampolha and for the impeachment and ineligibility of the president of Alerj, Rodrigo Bacellar. Pampolha’s ineligibility is not on trial because he joined Castro’s ticket shortly before the 2022 election.
The rapporteur understood that the lack of transparency by politicians in the use of public machinery made it difficult for citizens to analyze the use of public funds during the electoral period. According to the judge, there was abuse of political and economic power and irregularities in payrolls at Fundação Ceperj (the State Center for Statistics, Research and Training of Public Servants of Rio de Janeiro) and Uerj (State University of Rio de Janeiro) in 2022.
The remaining 6 judges must evaluate this 5th (May 23) the accusation by the State’s Regional Electoral Prosecutor’s Office that politicians used temporary employees as electoral canvassers, in addition to the state public machine with the purpose of draining public resources. Here’s the complete (PDF – 3 MB).
In a statement, Castro’s defense says it maintains “confidence in the Electoral Court” is that “although no new elements were presented in the case file to support the allegations”.
Another 9 people under investigation are also being tried. Are they:
- the state deputy Leo Vieira (PL-RJ);
- the federal deputy Aureo Ribeiro (Solidarity-RJ);
- the federal deputy Max Lemos (PDT-RJ);
- the former president of the Ceperj foundation Gabriel Rodrigues Lopes;
- the secretary of the state government of Rio de Janeiro Bernardo Rossi;
- the state secretary of Culture and Creative Economy Dani Barros;
- the substitutes for federal deputy Gutemberg de Paula Fonseca and Marcos Venissius da Silva Barbosa; and the
- former state secretary of Labor and Income Patrique Welber Atela de Faria.
