Last year, 2,600 parking error charges were issued for parking on a cycle path in Helsinki.
Helsinki parking enforcement, together with the police, will be stepping up this week to ensure that there are no incorrectly parked cars on the cycle paths or lanes as an obstacle to movement.
This time, the power strike of the week will focus specifically on parking that impairs mobility.
Parking that is detrimental to cyclists or pedestrians is common on both Hämeentie and Mechelininkatu, but also elsewhere in the street network. In 2020, Helsinki issued 2,600 parking error charges for parking on the bike path.
Road Traffic Act according to which the motor vehicle may be stopped temporarily on a separated cycle path if there are no other suitable places, there are compelling reasons for stopping it and the stopping does not cause unreasonable hindrance to the cycle path.
On new types of separated cycle paths, such as Hämeentie, these conditions are not met, in which case parking on the cycle path is not forced.
“For example, parking pockets have been made on the edge of the sidewalk on Hämeentie and the sidewalk is dimensioned so wide that momentary parking is possible there,” says the cycling coordinator. Oskari Kaupinmäki in the city bulletin.
In the campaign incorrect stopping on the sidewalk is also addressed.
When stopping on the pavement, there must be enough space in the unloading and loading situation so that the vehicle can also be reached with a pram and wheelchair on the sidewalk side.
It is only allowed to stop on the sidewalk when there is no free parking or loading space nearby and it is forbidden to stop on the road. When stopping on both the sidewalk and the bike path, stay close to the vehicle.
Power campaign is at the same time the starting point for monitoring the effectiveness of controls.
The city intends to monitor more systematically how controls are changing the traffic culture in the desired direction in the long run.
Corrigendum 13.6.2022 at 19.29: Changed to the title the word bike path instead of the bike lane. It is also emphasized in the caption that the photo was taken on Hämeentie.
