At least 17 people were killed and dozens were injured Wednesday after a train derailed near Tabas in central Iran.on a line linking the cities of Mashhad and Yazd, state media reported.

“Seventeen people died and another 37 wounded were taken to hospital. The death toll will surely increase because there are several critically injured“, announced the spokesman for the national rescue service, Mojtaba Khaledi, quoted by state television.

A first balance reported 10 deaths.
Images broadcast by the ‘Isna’ station show a wagon overturned on the track and four others embedded one on top of the other.
The number two of the state railway company, Mir Hassan Moussavi, told the radio station that the train was carrying 348 passengers: “It derailed after colliding with an excavator that was near the road“.
Five of the eleven wagons of the convoy went off the track, explained the emergency services. The accident took place at dawn, they added.

The incident comes after a building collapsed last month in southwestern Iran, killing at least 43 people.
In 2016, two trains collided and caught fire in the north of the country, causing 44 deaths and dozens of injuries.
