Traffic | A motorist who sped on an icy road was caught on police video in Helsinki

According to Dennis Pasterstein, the chief inspector of the Helsinki Police Department, drivers who drive at excessive speeds are caught by the police on the entrance roads every day.

Helsinki the police’s driving behavior monitoring cars catch a lot of speeding drivers on the city’s entrance roads every day.

Last week, one reveler was caught on police video on Tuusulanväylä, and the chief inspector of the Helsinki Police Department Dennis Pasterstein shared the video on the instant messaging service Twitter.

The driver drove at his fastest speed of almost 120 kilometers per hour, but slowed down for the surveillance cameras. It didn’t help though, as the police later stopped him. The driver was fined 24 days and was temporarily banned from driving.

Last speeding like a week is not uncommon, Pasterstein tells HS.

The High Commissioner does not have exact statistics, but he estimates that there are on average 1-2 such a day. Pasterstein thinks that the number of such high speeding has decreased in recent years as a result of police communication and monitoring.

He describes the driving performance of the last few weeks as dangerous: the driver overtook other cars during rush hour on a snowy and slippery road.

Based on the video, the driver was allowed to drive for a relatively long time before the police stopped him. However, according to Pasterstein, stopping drivers safely, especially on ring roads, is not simple.

“At the same time, if we turn on the stop lights and there are a lot of cars around, in such slippery weather, chain crashes can happen, for example, when everyone slams on the brakes. Stopping must be done carefully.”

Now the speeding driver was safely directed to the side of the road after Hämeenlinnanväylä near the shopping center Kaare.

Last In the past years, the focus of traffic control of the Helsinki Police Department has been the entrance roads and ring roads, says Pasterstein.

“Every time the traffic police is on duty, we try to get at least one or both of the driving style monitoring cars on the road. When there is control, there will be results.”

According to Pasterstein, driving style monitoring cars are slightly more efficient than other police cars. In addition, the alarm devices are better hidden in them, so that an outsider does not recognize them as a police car.

Driving behavior monitoring cars achieve more results than traditional police cars, but they also have their downside: According to Pasterstein, the police receives feedback that its monitoring is not visible to citizens in traffic.
