Autonomous production of lithium-ion batteries is becoming the key to electrification of car manufacturers around the world. Toyota raises the bar in this regard: the Japanese automaker has announced that it will invest up to 3.4 billion dollars by 2030 in the development and production of electric batteries in the United States. Not only that: Toyota also aims to give life to a new company dedicated to the division of batteries and to build a new plant who takes care of the construction of the batteries themselves.
The Japanese carmaker also released the first details about this new production plant: production will be launched in 2025 and will employ 1,750 new jobs. Toyota has announced that initially the batteries produced at that site will be destined for hybrid vehicles, and then also move to 100% electric ones. As pointed out by Reuters, the funds that Toyota will allocate to the construction of this plant are part of the 13.5 billion dollars announced in September by the Japanese brand, which planned to allocate them to the development of batteries and the infrastructure network that lies behind it globally by 2030 The largest Japanese car manufacturer also declared in September that it wanted to reduce the cost of your batteries at least 30%, working on the materials used and the way the cells are structured.
Toyota added that only at a later time will it reveal the production capacity and the location of the new plant, as well as the corporate structure of the new company. “These new investments will help us introduce more affordable electrified vehicles for US customers”commented Ted Ogawa, the CEO of Toyota North America. Toyota’s announcement comes on the day Stellantis announced its intention to create a new joint venture with LG Energy Solution, which will have as its main target the construction of a new plant dedicated to the production of batteries in North America.
