In the days immediately preceding the Canadian GP weekend, the main topic in the paddock and in the world of F1 focused on the need to take action quickly to counteract the phenomenon of porpoising, which became difficult for the pilots to bear physically. An appeal, however, which was heard by the FIA, so much so that the latter has issued new ones technical directives to ensure that the jolts of the cars could already be limited to the current season. Outside of this move, however, the complaints of most of the drivers were still the center of attention between the Baku race and the weekend in Montreal, with the latter particularly annoying the AlphaTauri team principal. Franz Tost.
The Austrian manager, during the pre-GP Canadian press conference, expressed his opinion on the continuous affirmations of the drivers, not hiding a direct message towards them: “These they are Formula 1 single-seaters, not Rolls RoycAnd – commented the 66-year-old – and pilots should be aware of this. If the cars are too stiff or hard for them at that point they better stay at homein the living room e sitting on a chair to be able to do their races. It was clear from the start that these cars were not going to be easy to drive – he added – this type of bottom makes it necessary to have a rigid set-up of the cars, which are very close to the ground. Cars are no longer as comfortable to drive as they used to be. Now the pilots are complaining. I can understand that it’s not that easy for them, but on the other hand, as I said, this is a Formula One, not a Rolls Royce ”.
In conclusion, Tost recalled an anecdote dating back to the wing car period, in the late 1970s, when the drivers of the time had to cope with the physical consequences generated by ground effect cars: “I remember in those years – he has declared – a pilot came to me, and said to me: “I have to go to the dentist tomorrow because I lose my enamel when cornering. The cars are very difficult to drive ”. After all, this is not new ”.
