Tom Hanks could have gone into space last month with Jeff Bezos’ commercial rocket. The actor told Jimmy Kimmel’s talk show why he kindly declined the invitation.
When asked if it’s true that the place William Shatner eventually occupied was offered to him first, Hanks replied: “Yes, if I paid. It was something like $28 million or close. Now I’m burping, Jimmy, I’m fine. But I’m not going to pay 28 million.”
Oldest person
Shatner’s space journey, who became the oldest person ever in space, was funded by a donation, according to American media. Hanks said in the late night show that he would have gone along if he could have gone for free. The Apollo 13 actor joked that he especially wanted to experience “what it’s like to be a billionaire”.
Bezos and fellow billionaire Richard Branson both went into space in July. The Briton eventually boarded a spacecraft from his company Virgin Galactic nine days earlier. Although the two had both seemed eager to be the first to space for a while, Branson insisted he hadn’t set his date to outsmart Bezos.
