Rushing to the station – ten killed

The derailment of an express train in Jyväskylä on March 6, 1998 caused a major accident in which ten people died.

When a major accident happens, luck can play a big role in whether a person survives.

“Usually, I always go to the first wagon, so that it is also the first to arrive. I was still smoking cigars at the time, and now the cigar and tobacco booth near the restaurant car solved the problem,” recalls the journalist of the tragedy Juha Veli Jokinen Where were you when the passenger train derailed in Jyväskylä? in the program.

The train had to turn right from the switch, but the speed was still 110 km/h, when it should have slowed down to 35 km/h. Two wagons overturned and five derailed. The locomotive was thrown to the other side of highway 4.

Nine passengers and one of the train drivers died. 94 passengers were injured.

“When I got out of the train, it was snowing and there was a deep silence. The air smelled of diesel and engine oil, surrounded by sobbing and crying people,” says Jokinen.

Another of today's interviewees is the chairman of the train accident investigation board Kari Alppivuori.

When the accident investigation center's emergency phone rang, it turned out that it would be possible to get to Jyväskylä quickly on the next flight.

“It took a little over two hours when I was already there. Later, braking tests were carried out on a similar train. Based on the information in the black box, we marked the spots on the terrain that were braking spots.”

Six people died in the second carriage. They flew out of the window and got stuck under the wagons. There were no seat belts on the trains at that time – and Jyväskylä also did not have the current access control system that would have prevented such an accident.

The accident investigation determined that the cause of the accident was a wrong interpretation of the new signs and an excessively high speed.
