For some years now, alarms have been going off for the famous “viral challenges” that are popularized through the TikTok social network. Now, several lawsuits have been added against the Chinese social network for promoting these challenges.
Since 2022, many Mexican newscasts, above all, have reported not a few cases of basic education students who have been intoxicated after participating in the TikTok challenge called “clonazepam challenge”which consists of taking said controlled medication and seeing who can last the longest without falling asleep.
Given this, the Mexican health authorities have already taken action on the matter. At the time, parents have been asked to closely monitor their minor children to prevent them from having access to clonazepam.
Fortunately, so far, in Mexico there have been no deaths of children or young people from participating in viral challenges on the ByteDance virtual platform. However, infants in other parts of the world have not had the same luck.
It is so since 2021 in the United States several Parents have filed lawsuits against TikTok after their underage children lost their lives trying to do the challenges that circulate on the Asian platform.
Specifically, the lawsuits against ByteDance in US territory focus on cases where children have died performing the famous challenge “blackout challenge” or “blackout challenge”.
It is in this way that the parents of deceased minors of 8, 9, 10 yearsamong others, have pointed out the guilt of TikTok for the loss of life of minors, since they accuse that the algorithm showed infants videos about the challenge that caused their death.
“TikTok has invested billions of dollars in creating products designed to distribute dangerous content, knowing that this content is dangerous and can lead to the death of its users,” said the attorney Matthew Bergmanwhose firm, Social Media Victims Law Center (SMVLC), is a specialist in defending victims of abuse linked to the operation of social networks.
