TikTok has officially launched a new native app for Apple's Vision Pro headset, the Apple mixed reality viewer just launched in the States. The interface of the new app is familiar to those who have already had the opportunity to use TikTok on iOS or Android devices, offering a vertically oriented player for viewing videos, as well as buttons for liking, commenting, adding to favorites and sharing . However, TikTok has taken advantage of the additional space offered by the Vision Pro's screen to better distribute interface elements, placing comments and creator profiles in a side panel, so as not to obscure the main player.
The news was teased last month, when Ahmad Zahran, TikTok's head of product, revealed that his team had “completely rethought the TikTok experience” for the headset. Thanks to Vision Pro, users now have the ability to enjoy TikTok videos while keeping their real environment visible or immersing themselves in completely virtual locations, such as the lunar surface. The app also works simultaneously with other applications on the headset.
The support of the main video streaming services for Apple's innovative hardware has not involved all companies with the same enthusiasm. On the one hand, Disney proved to be a key partner, offering the possibility of streaming 3D movies on the Vision Pro via Disney Plus. Apple also announced support for services such as Amazon Prime Video, Paramount Plus, Mubi and Discovery Plus. D' on the other hand, Netflix and YouTube have chosen not to even allow their iPad apps to run on the headset in compatible mode, instead directing users to use their services via the Safari browser. However, YouTube, which has been trying to compete with TikTok of late through its YouTube Shorts service, recently confirmed that an app for Vision Pro is in its future plans.
