A terrorist driving a truck through the Allenby border crossing between Jordan and the West Bank opened fire on soldiers and ended up killing three Israeli civilians on Sunday (8), authorities said, eliminating the attacker, identified as Jordanian Maher Jazi, at the scene of the attack.
“A terrorist has approached the Allenby Bridge area [ao norte do Mar Morto] coming from Jordan in a truck. He got out of the truck and opened fire on Israeli security forces operating on the bridge,” the Israeli army said in a statement.
“The terrorist was eliminated by security forces,” he added.
Israel’s Magen David Adom (MDA) emergency service, with the help of military medics, “declared three men dead from gunshot wounds,” the MDA said in a statement.
The army specified that the three dead were Israeli civilians, and two of them were identified as Yohanan Shchori and Yuri Birnbaum, both residents of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, aged 61 and 65 respectively.
The spokesman for the Israel Airports Authority, which controls the border crossings, confirmed to EFE that the three victims were crane operators who were working there at the time of the attack.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the episode in which “a despicable terrorist murdered three citizens in cold blood” and called for Israeli unity against the “axis of evil” led by Iran.
Several military troops were sent to the scene to dispel suspicions that the truck was loaded with explosives, the army said.
The Allenby land crossing has been closed, the Israeli army told EFE.
Additionally, all border crossings from Israel to Jordan have also been closed, the Airport Authority said.
For their part, Jordanian authorities announced an investigation into the case.
Several Palestinian terrorist groups hailed the attack, which they described as “heroic.”
