This is the fourth time Brazil has experienced massive flooding in five months, underscoring the lack of urban planning in slums in much of the country, where slums are often built on the slopes of collapsing hills.
The devastation also comes as scientists question whether the abnormal rain cycles in Latin America’s largest country are caused by the effects of climate change.
As of Sunday afternoon, 56 people had died in the northeastern state of Pernambuco, and another person had died in the neighboring state of Alagoas, the Federal Civil Defense Service, in charge of emergency management, said on Twitter.
Another 56 people are missing in Pernambuco.
