a report published by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (Mytec) concludes that, in 2023, only 41.3% of plastic bottles were collected, a figure well below the required 70% by the Waste Law for this year.
According to their data, of the 214,039 tons of plastic bottles that entered the Spanish market in 2023, only less than 90,000 were collected, of which 74,482 by local entities and another 14,017 by private collections. That is to say, only 41% returned to the system.
For this reason, and given that the objectives of previous years have also been missed, the ministry is going to launch the deposit, refund and return system within two years (SDDR) from single-use plastic bottles.
“According to the percentage of separate collection of SUP bottles for the year 2023, the separate collection objectives established in article 59 of the LRSCEC are not achieved, for the year 2023 and, consequently, a deposit, return and return system (hereinafter SDDR) must be implemented throughout the national territory and within a period of two years.”concludes the aforementioned report.
Return the helmets
As its name indicates, the SDDR is a packaging management mechanism that seeks, precisely, to improve the current system. How does it work? This is, in essence, the same traditional system that was used in the past with glass bottles in the past.
Every consumer who purchases a plastic bottle will pay an additional amount for this, what will be refunded once you return the empty container.
This measure works in fifty countries and regions around the world, including 16 countries in Europe. With it, it is estimated that the recovery of these plastics can rise to 90%.
