The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) warns of the importance of responding to a request that can reach drivers by email or regular mail. «If you receive a communication with a requirement to identify a driver who has committed an infraction with your vehicle, do so. Failure to do so is a very serious infraction, ”they warn from the DGT Twitter account.
The penalty for not responding to this email involves a significant economic fine that can reach the high figure of 1,500 euros. According to the DGT, to respond to this request, which can be sent to you by email or ordinary mail, you must complete all the information you request. Name, surnames, DNI, passport or residence permit, and postal address of the person who was driving the vehicle. In the communication you will find an area where you can complete this information, if you wish to carry out the identification process in person at the Traffic offices.
This procedure must be carried out by the owner of the vehicle with which the infraction was committed and who has received the request from the DGT. It can also be done by another person on her behalf, who must indicate the DNI of the interested party and also that of the authorized person. According to the DGT, there is a period of 20 days, from the day after the communication of the request has arrived. If you have not received the communication, you will have 20 calendar days from the day following its publication on the Single Edictal Board.
How to identify the driver
1. Online, with or without prior identification. If you make the identification by this means, you need to have the communication that they have given you with the identification requirement. It will not be possible to carry out the identification online if the driver does not reside in Spanish territory or if the driver does not have the appropriate permit for the vehicle with which he has committed the offence.
2. From the ‘miDGT’ application, from this DGT app you can consult all the information. To identify the offender of a fine from the app, you must go to the main menu of the application and enter the ‘My fines’ section and then the ‘Pending’ section.
3. By postal mail. You can return the form you have received, duly completed, to the Traffic Headquarters address that appears on the form received or to the Automated Complaints Processing Center.
4. In person, delivering all the documentation at any Traffic Headquarters. To do this, you need to request an appointment online or by calling 060.
