Nobody doubts that in the not-so-distant future, our smartphones will be able to do practically everything we need in our daily lives. You can now pay with them, work is being done to use them as a travel card on public transport, to open the door at home or even use them as a thermometer.
And smartphones have become our most faithful companion of all, and regardless of the place, time or reason, the cell phone comes with us everywhere. Therefore, as part of the modernization expected from the authorities, the The European Union is preparing a digital wallet that it hopes will be operational by 2026.
This digital wallet consists of a mobile app that will unify all official procedures, and will house our personal documentation (DNI), passport, driving licensebut it will also be used to make payments, make doctor’s appointments or save plane tickets, among other things.
The idea is that of create a great platform that unifies and digitizes in this way all these processes that until now have only been managed by companies privately. And Spain is playing a very active role in the development of this technology because this week the General Assembly of the ‘European Wallet Consortium’ (EWC) was held in Madrid where it is being discussed. What will this future Digital Identity be like applied to travel and traveler control?
We already told you something a few days ago with the European proposal for digital passports, and now the Spanish capital is being the center of this innovation. The key to this digital wallet, as we have already said, is unify all credentials within our own smartphone.
An example of this may be to pick up a package in which you have to show your ID to be able to pick it up. With this app, you can go alone with your mobile phone and show it, but that is not the only advantage, it It is also more secure, because it will only show your full name and identification number, not like the physical ID that contains more sensitive information such as your address.
And the digital wallet is much more secure than we may think and, for example, It will be more difficult for scammers to use false documents or impersonate you. As we said, the plan is for this digital wallet to be ready and operational by 2026, even so since The EU have assured that it will not be mandatory, and that when it comes out, only those users who want to do it voluntarily will be able to do it for free.
