In retrospect, a heat pump and solar panels would not have been such a crazy investment. If those solar panels hadn’t been taken by storm Eunice, then they would. With the rising gas prices you are now stuck with baked pears, while you would rather have a baked meal for little money. Don’t worry, we have the solution: cooking food under the hood. At least if you drive a fuel engine.
Did you know that about 60 percent of all energy is lost in a combustion engine? Most of it disappears into the air as heat. This means that of that 2.2 euros per liter, you do not convert 1.3 euros into movement, but throw it away. So why not use that heat to cook food under the hood? This is a rhetorical question, which we will answer at the end of the day.
Step 1: Choose the right food
You probably want a cooked meal when you come back from a day at work. So see how long the drive home from work is. You won’t be able to make stew during a 10-minute drive. Certainly not because the engine is not immediately up to temperature. Adjust the food to be prepared to how long you will be in the car. And check that you don’t have a leaking exhaust manifold.
Step 2: Cooking food under the hood has to be in the right place
Do you drive to work in the morning to have breakfast there? Then put your sandwiches on the seat heating. If something just needs to cook or heat up a bit, place it near the radiator. It will be between 90 and 120 degrees (the boiling point is higher due to the closed cooling system). Watch out for the exhaust, because it can get up to 900 degrees. The heat shield above the manifold may become less hot, but keep an appropriate distance.
Step 3: Pack the food well
Wrap the food to be prepared well in aluminum foil. Really good, because the engine compartment is not the most hygienic place for your meal. Place your food in the chosen spot under the hood and start the ride. Enjoy your new barbecue scented air freshener while driving. And watch out for crazy smoke from under the hood. Always have a pair of pliers handy to remove the food.
Step 4: Taste the food and consider a barbecue
And how did it go? Does it taste like what a workplace smells like? Then maybe you’d better throw away the food and organize a barbecue. That also saves gas. For liability reasons, we really advise against preparing a meal under the hood. The good news is that you will soon be able to simply connect your Airfryer to the charging port of an electric car. You can read below whether a petrol car also has the power to do so.
