This is how they live in Ljubljana, the European city that has no cars

The capital of Slovenia, Ljubljana, is known worldwide for a plan that it developed 10 years ago: keeping its streets free of vehicles.

It is true that for this European city it is different compared to cities like São Paulo, in Brazil, or Bogotá, in Colombia, because its population does not exceed 300,000 inhabitants.

However, it is a carefully elaborated plan in order to become a green capital in 2025.

The first decision made by the city authorities so that this initiative could be contemplated was to invest in the strengthening of pedestrian paths and bicycle paths.

“It is critical that they describe to residents exactly what the plans are and why they are proposing them. At first people are hesitant about the change, but it’s easier to accept a situation if you report on the positive aspects,” Slovenian academic Saša Poljak Istenič tells Vice.

Little by little Ljubljana has become an example. Your streets look cleaner and smoke or noise pollution are things of the past.
