The fire department of the Provincial Council of Bizkaia As of today, it has a new member, ‘Colossus’, a robot specialized in high-risk interventions and complexity. Half a ton in weight and resistant to temperatures up to 800ºC, It is the first of its kind that is operational in Spain. A similar device intervened in extinguishing the fire at the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris.
The general deputy of Bizkaia, Elixabete Etxanobereceived from the president of the Port Authority of Bilbao, Ricardo Barkalaa state-of-the-art multifunction electric robot, within the collaboration agreement that they have had since 1996. This innovative equipment will be used by the members of the Provincial Prevention, Fire Fighting and Rescue Service of the Provincial Council, under the collaboration agreement signed between both entities.
According to what they point out, this electric robot is “among the most powerful in the world and it is the first of these characteristics that will operate in a fire service at the state level.” It is an unmanned land machine, directed by remote controlwhich assumes the risk in dangerous or highly complex situations, such as fires, highly contaminated environments or collapses, minimizing the risk to firefighters.
A device with identical characteristics was used in a highly complex emergency operation, such as the fire. of the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris.
The robot, with 500 kilos of weight, It is mounted on tracks, which allows it to overcome obstacles up to 30 centimeters high, go up and down stairs, ascend slopes of more than 40ºpush and move loads of up to one ton. In addition, its water self-protection system provides resistance to extreme temperature peaks – up to 800ºC.
Among its many applications, in addition to firefighting, the robot is designed for other jobs such as rescues, evacuation and transfer of victims, transporting heavy equipment and tools in difficult environments, performing reconnaissance tasks, taking measurements of various variables such as temperature, toxicity, available oxygen, explosive atmospheres, etc.
Up to 16 hours of autonomy
Colossus, located in the Artaza fire station in Biscay, is equipped with an interchangeable battery system that allows autonomy of up to 16 hours. Manufactured in France by Shark Robotics, it has a 3,000 l/min water and foam extinction monitor, optical and thermal cameras with 360º vision, and a load capacity of more than 500 kg. These technical characteristics reinforce its versatility in critical situations, ensuring fast and efficient deployment with minimal maintenancethey assure from the regional entity.
Along with the multifunction robot, it has also been presented a state-of-the-art truck-crane in the facilities of the Port of Bilbao. This vehicle is multipurpose, designed to transport any service container with various equipment, and has a crane for handling loads both in emergency situations and in any other logistics activity of the service.
The multifunction robot and the truck-crane, which have involved a total investment of 607,773 euros, are part of the collaboration agreement between the Provincial Council and the port authority, by which the firefighters act as the intervention group in the Port of Bilbaoin accordance with the Port Self-Protection Plan. For its part, the port authority provides advanced equipment and specialized training. “We always agree on the acquisition of all equipment with the professionals who provide this service. On this occasion, in addition, utility has been combined with innovation, high technology and, something essential, safety. This new endowment, like all the previous ones, It can be used both inside and outside the Port.in any incident that could occur in Bizkaia”, recalled Ricardo Barkala.
