November 19 RM Sotheby’s sold the incredible cars of the Guikas Collection, that is, a formidable group of cars from different sectors and classes such as Formula 1, prototype sports, GT and numerous ‘road’ cars. The absolute queen was one Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta Competizione from 1955, bodyworked by Pininfarina. Its value was estimated at between 7 and 9 million euros, a very high figure. It did not reach these heights, but an offer from was accepted nonetheless 6 million and about 200 thousand euros. In short, a good deal for those who have taken home a remarkable piece of Ferrari history.
The car is one of only six 250 GT Berlinetta Competizione built. Not only that: it is one of the three examples with Pininfarina bodywork, whose shapes recall the 375 MM Berlinetta. The car is fully certified in terms of originality. It had already been restored by the Maranello marque way back in 1977 and was later able to get an engine practically restored to new by a UK-based Cavallino specialist (year 1995). The numbers of the engine, gearbox and other components coincide perfectly, a detail which has increased the base value.
The story goes that this car, together with its few sisters, was a kind of prototype for the development of the 250 GT Berlinetta ‘Tour de France’, which had sporting successes in abundance. The Berlinetta Competizione was created on the basis of the 250 Europa, chassis Tipo 508, with a wheelbase of 2600 millimeters; it was entrusted with Colombo’s Tipo 112 engine. The car sold on November 19 has chassis number 0385 GT. The trunk lid is missing, in the sense that it was excluded a priori from the design: a factor that actually improved its clean and fluid lines, when viewed from behind. The front suspension is independent with coil springs and the dashboard instruments are Borletti Type 102. It features more competition oriented sliding side windows.
