Armed individuals caused panic by trying to rob the attendees of the ceremony in Monrovia
Some 30 people, 10 of them children, were killed in a stampede on Wednesday night during a Christian religious event in the Liberian capital, Monrovia, after a group of armed people tried to rob some of those present. According to the local newspaper ‘Front Page Africa’, the stampede was unleashed when a group of criminals attacked the faithful with machetes and other bladed weapons, causing an avalanche of people trying to flee from the prayer ceremony known as ‘crusade’ .
After the criminals began to extract money and cell phones from those present, “we got scared and started running, but the door was too small for everyone. Those who fell were trampled, “said a woman. Police spokesman Moses Carter confirmed the arrest of a person armed with a knife.
The bodies have been transferred to the morgue of the Redemption Hospital, located near the place of the act, in New Kru Town. Liberian President George Weah declared three days of national mourning and that flags be lowered to half-staff on public buildings.
