In the last debate between the candidates for the Head of Government of Mexico City, held last Sunday, May 12, the candidate of “Together We Make History in Mexico City” -coalition made up of Morena, PT and PVEM-, Clara Brugada, presented a strategy focused on environmental protection, specifically on conservation of water forests, vital for the ecological balance of the southern area of the capital.
Brugada highlighted his commitment to combat illegal logging and urban advance towards areas of ecological importance, underscoring the need to preserve forests that act as natural filters for groundwater.
However, attention focused on Brugada’s response to accusations of Santiago Taboada, PAN candidate, who pointed out to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and other officials of Morena as alleged members of the so-called “real estate cartel.” Taboada denied and claimed to have nothing to hide.
In his response, Brugada emphasized that true care for the environment It must begin from a collective perspective and not from the privatization of the city. He stressed the importance of considering social and natural rights with fundamental aspects for urban development. Likewise, he pointed out that if the city is conceived as an ecosystem, a balance can be achieved between urban growth and environmental preservation.
As for the “real estate cartel”, Brugada did not hesitate to accuse Taboada of being one of its representatives, highlighting the negative consequences that this phenomenon has on the city and its inhabitants. He stated that this sign affects access to water, increases housing problems and displaces local communities.
To counteract these problems, Brugada promised that in his government public spaces will be improved, the housing proposal will be strengthened and projects that generate tangible results for the benefit of citizens will continue to be developed.
The confrontation between Brugada and Taboada reflects the polarization of opinions regarding urban development and environmental protection in Mexico City, crucial issues that will be decisive in the upcoming elections.
