The Step.– Under the motto “The path to financial well-being” and with the aim of strengthening the financial capabilities of the Mexican community abroad, promoting savings, correct money management and the intelligent use of financial services, the Consulate General of Mexico in El Paso will carry out the National Financial Education Week 2024 (SNEF) from September 9 to 13.
It was reported that the SNEF is an effort designed to positively impact the well-being of the Mexican diaspora abroad, through talks and information tables with various allies in the financial sector.
“Here, the Mexican and Hispanic community will be offered key information to better manage their resources, improve their economy, protect their assets and start businesses,” said Adriana Martínez-Landaverde, Consul for Community Affairs at the diplomatic headquarters.
He explained that during the SNEF, different financial allies will offer forums, conferences, workshops and talks on personal finances, savings, credit, insurance, prevention of financial fraud and entrepreneurship, which will be transmitted in a friendly, simple, citizen and colloquial language, with the purpose of linking the personal finances of the population with daily life.
Among the outstanding activities scheduled for Tuesday the 10th is a tax workshop, where representatives of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will be present to guide and advise taxpayers in preparing taxes, resolving overdue returns and answering questions.
Additionally, the Taxpayer Advocate Service Department will be available to address specific situations taxpayers may have with the IRS, providing customized solutions and support in complex cases.
An Information Fair will be held on Wednesday, September 11 with the participation of representatives of government institutions from Mexico and the United States, banks, credit unions, real estate companies, insurance companies and the IRS. In addition, there will be a face-to-face talk on “Financial Education”,
For five consecutive years, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) through the Institute of Mexicans Abroad (IME) in collaboration with the National Commission for the Protection and Defense of Users of Financial Services (CONDUSEF), the Embassies and Consulates of Mexico, allied institutions of the Mexican government and private organizations in the financial sector, have carried out this initiative.
It was said that this week, which begins on Monday the 9th, virtual talks will be held on the following topics: Infonavit Program for the migrant community; How to create your resume; The empowerment of adolescents in their growth and the importance of making a business plan.
Information will also be provided regarding: What is the W4 form?, the importance of obtaining the Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) and its use, as well as the activities carried out by volunteers who participate in VITA centers, which offer free tax help to people who need assistance with the preparation of their own tax returns.
According to consular authorities, the SNEF is considered one of the most important financial education events in Mexico, which seeks to develop participants’ ability to manage their financial resources and plan a dignified retirement.
“There is no doubt that attendees who participate in these talks will learn what to do to better manage their money, reducing the risks of over-indebtedness and encouraging savings through the proper use of financial services and products to chart the path to financial well-being,” the organizers emphasized.
