Elvira Segundo García was sentenced to 33 years and 4 months in prison for forcing her daughters to sell fruits and vegetables at a street market in San Felipe del Progreso, in the State of Mexico.
The Attorney General’s Office of the State of Mexico (FGJEM) reported that it confirmed the woman’s participation in the crime of human trafficking, in the form of forced laborwith the aggravating modification of being minors and there is a family relationship.
According to the investigation, Elvira forced her two underage daughters to sell various vegetables and condimentsin the tianguis of the municipality of San Felipe del Progreso, on weekends, holidays and during vacation periods.
The FGJEM indicated that in August 2016, when one of the victims was 9 years old, Elvira began to force her to carry out said activity.
In January 2017, the institution added, the mother of the minors forced another of her daughters, then 6 years old, to market various vegetables in the tianguis and surrounding streets.
Both minors were not fed while they worked from 6 in the morning until 8 at night, in addition to being beaten by their mother, assured the Edomex Prosecutor’s Office.
On September 5, 2019, the two minors were rescued by their father, who went to report the events to the FGJEM.
Derived from the complaint, the Social Representative asked a judge to issue an arrest warrant against the woman.
Thus, in September 2020, Elvira was detained by the Investigative Police and admitted to the Penitentiary and Social Reintegration Center of Ixtlahuacawhere it remained at the disposal of the Judicial Authority.
A judge issued this sentence for the accused, who must also pay a fine of 73,040 pesos and 197,760 pesos as compensation for the damage.
