The archaeological excavations carried out in Løsning Søndermark (Hedensted, Denmark) for the expansion of a highway have found a sensational discovery: near 200 Iron Age weaponsas well as A mesh level incredibly well preserved and parts of a Roman helmet.
Between 1,500 and 2,000 years ago, a tribal chief buried enough weapons for a small army in two structures located northwest of Hedensted, between Vejle and Horsens. Next to the spears and swords, a mesh level of great value and other objects were also deposited, indicating that the place was the home of a powerful tribal boss.
«The way in which the war team was buried suggests that it was An offering to higher powers», He says The Vejle Cultural Museumwhere parts of this extraordinary finding will be exhibited, including the plates of the Roman helmet, starting on February 8.
The first findings were announced in November 2024, raising great interest. The Danish agency of Palacios and Culture included the discovery among the most notable of the year, but “it is actually even more surprising than what was thought of initially,” according to the museum, because the works have recently given parts of a helmet Roman.
It’s about two unusual iron plates, both of the size of the palm of one hand. At first glance, it was not clear where these two plates came from, but with the help of X -rays, conservatives and archaeologists could observe under the thick layers of oxide formed on the objects that were remains of a Roman helmet.

Specifically, of a neck plate and a cheek plate decorated from a so -called crest helmeta type of helmet used in the Roman Empire in the fourth century. “There are very few findings of Roman helmets of the Iron Age throughout the south of Scandinavia and there are no direct parallels with this finding,” says the Vejle Cultural Museum. The few similar findings come from Thorsbjerg Mose in Schleswig, or southern Sweden and Gotland.
Nor is it common to find specimens of mesh level of the Iron Age in this region of Southern Scandinavia. The Løsning Søndermark is the first that is related to a settlement and it is not a burial or finding in a swamp.

Only the Warrior elite It owned these expensive armor, whose production required technical knowledge, access to resources and a lot of long -term work.
The mesh level has been unearthed along with the surrounding ground so that it can be completely excavated in the conservation center.
Oath rings
In the huge offering of arms, archaeologists have also found parts of Two bronze rings for the neck with parallels with representations of rulers of the iron age.
From the museum they remember that the so -called oath ring is a symbol of power and influence and a well -known motive in the Nordic imitations of Roman medallions and gold bracteats. In Vindelev’s treasure, a leading figure is represented, a leading figure that attaches a so -called oath ring in one hand, as a symbol of that person’s power and influence.

The founds of the neck rings found and Vindelev bracteate
Løsning Søndermark rings probably had a similar function and may have been part of the personal team of one or more official or nobletogether with the mesh levels and swords.
“The bearer of the ring in the bracteatos (medals) of Vindelev even saw a suit with an unusual pattern, which possibly represents a mesh level, as also found in Løsning Søndermark,” the institution underlines.
Two intriguing burials
The numerous weapons were buried in two different houses. They believe that one of the burials was made after demolishing the house and starting the great posts that supported the roof. They were in one of the holes that remained there. The second concealment was carried out, on the other hand, during the construction of the house. The weapons and the war team piled up around the posts that support the roof.
The researchers interpret these weapons findings such as «remains of ceremonies or sacrifices related to the residence of a noble“Because” it is not a relics of a forge of arms, equipment of a personnel or similar barracks. ” Future investigations are expected to shed light on whether the weapons belonged to local warriors or was a spot of war.
