They are not patriotic, they are scavengers

Among all the moving images that the Valencia tragedy is leaving behind, there was one that especially moved me a few days ago and I don’t really know how to describe why. Marta Carazo was doing a live broadcast from Utiel when a group of kids carrying shovels passed by her. It was already dark and there was no electricity in Utiel. Despite this, they had traveled from another town to unclog the sewers and facilitate the cleaning work once it was daylight. They were there, working in the dark, covered in mud up to their heads. The generation that is always accused of strident individualism.

At the opposite extreme are those who use their privileged speaker these days to engage in demagoguery at the expense of other people’s pain. It exasperates me to see influencers spreading misinformation on their social networks with inflamed apolitical messages, a perfect breeding ground for the extreme right to spread outrage with their slander, a perfect breeding ground for the violence that we are already witnessing. The solidarity of likes exhausts me, which is what some seek while they record themselves making donations, which are more advertising than altruistic. And it unnerves me to see how the usual generators of hate are spreading it shamelessly. They are firm deniers of climate change and the intrusion of the State. They, who call themselves patriotic, are nothing more than disgusting scavengers.
