Geoff Keighley’s show has starred in Dead Island 2, New Tales from the Borderlands or Sonic Frontiers.
I feel bad being repetitive but I look back at the last events organized by the well-known journalist Geoff Keighleyand the summary is practically the same: an exaggeratedly long show that leaves us with some exciting flashes, but ends up exhausting you mentally with the continuous bombardment of trailers, images and world premieres that would not go beyond third division announcements in practically any scenario that it crosses your mind.
True to his style, the organizer of the Summer Game Fest bets on the quantity and not so much on the quality of the content presented at the Opening Night Live that serves as a preview of Gamescom 2022, the great video game event in Europe that after these years of absence due to the pandemic, finally opens the doors to the general public. This does not mean, however, that it has been a bad show because as I was telling you, once again, there have been a good handful of announcements to get excited about. Also many cinematics and little gameplay, but this is another issue that happens year after year and it does not seem that it will change in the near future.
The ONL bets on the quantity and not so much on the quality of the contents presentedGamescom 2022 kicked off with the unexpected presence of Everywhere, the veteran’s ambitious new sandbox Leslie Benzies, former producer of the GTA series, who has made it very clear that they are going all out with this open world action game that is actually made up of multiple gaming experiences that players from all over the world can participate in MMO style. After this we have had another bombshell like -finally- the presentation of Dune: Awakening, the new open world RPG from the authors of Conan Exiles which they started talking about at the end of 2019. The problem is that the announcement has been limited to a cinematic, so we still don’t really know much about this project.
Leaks at Gamescom 2022
In recent years, leaks have spoiled some of the most unexpected announcements in the video game industry, and it is something that this time -among others- the team of gear box with its rumored New Tales from the Borderlands, which has been seen on video, also discovering all the details of this adventure, lots of images and even the release date. The game it looks great, by the way. Another that has not been spared from leaks, or rather from oversights, has been Sonic Frontiers, which has presented a trailer that leaves a better taste in the mouth, and has also specified its release date.
There is no denying that Opening Night Live has been loaded with announcements and that the pace of the event has been very high. There has hardly been time for a breather with videos and trailers popping up endlessly. Among them new videos of Howarts Legacy or Return to Monkey Island, or the terrifying The Callisto Protocol, which does not miss a single one of these events. Gotham Knights, which just a few days ago was already seen in an extensive gameplay, did not want to miss the party either. The problem, at least for me, is that there are so many trailers, some of just a few seconds, others that are pure CGI and no gameplay, that I end up tired of seeing this festival of labels and explosions.
There are painful examples. They give you long teeth with an RPG created by veterans after Fallout New Vegas or Skyrim, the trailer begins… and in just a few seconds it’s over, without showing gameplay, and without giving details. They come back again with a shooter from DICE veterans, they play the video… and in three seconds it’s over. Why flood the show with ads of this type when you know that they unnecessarily lengthen the duration of the show? Of course, appearing in an event of these characteristics gives you enormous visibility, but there are games that already seem to be subscribers to these shows and you have seen them so much that they don’t arouse the slightest interest. Or others who appear to say nothing. And at least it exhausts me mentally.
Obviously I was delighted to finally see a good trailer for The Outlast Trials, which brings its survival horror experience to the field of cooperative games, and of course it made me very happy to rediscover Dead Island 2 with a cinematic and a gameplay trailer. But the final feeling I have with Geoff Keighley’s latest show is that far from learning from mistakes, he insists on them. It scares me to think what awaits us at The Game Awards 2022, which already has a date. Until that day arrives, here is a list of some of the highlights from the Gamescom 2022 event.
