In recent years, car manufacturers have presented 'smart' voice assistants with undue pride. For example, you could say that your hands were cold, and the car would then turn on the heated steering wheel. But otherwise it was like trying to have a good conversation during Thunderdome (“what have you got!?”). That will change with the new Volkswagen Golf.
Today the CES tech fair starts in Las Vegas. Volkswagen seizes the moment to reveal some photos of the updated Golf GTI, but with a tracksuit on. You can also call this generation of Golf the 8.5, enthusiasts will then know that you mean the facelift of the eighth generation. And the brand reveals something about the voice assistant.
Volkswagen is not yet revealing much information about the new Golf GTI, but it seems as if the car will have a sportier face. The front bumper now looks more like that of the current Golf R. The rear diffuser is also more pronounced. Volkswagen has subtly adjusted the lighting at the front and rear. And even more good news: the real buttons on the steering wheel are back. They are no longer clumsy swipe panels.
ChatGPT complements the current voice assistant IDA in the new Golf. If you ask a question, IDA will deal with it first. If the Volkswagen assistant cannot resolve the issue, ChatGPT will be consulted. According to the brand, GPT does not have access to the vehicle data. The bot's response is passed on to IDA, so you hear everything from the trusted voice.
What exactly does it do for you?
Most voice assistants in cars are now quite limited. You can sometimes ask what the weather is at the destination, but you might want to know if it is too cold for a t-shirt. Or maybe you want to ask GPT what the best songs are for a road trip. Or 'my partner says nothing is wrong, but hasn't said anything to me for two hours, how is this possible?'.
The bottom line is that you will soon be able to ask the voice assistant in the car for practically anything, and that can be useful. Volkswagen is rolling out the update to the Tiguan, Passat and the ID models. ChatGPT should appear in Volkswagens in the second quarter of this year. By the way, VW is not the first: Mercedes has also already integrated the bot.
