Mexico City.- President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said that there is so much nepotism in the Judiciary that the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) could well be called DIF, since it is practically a “family” institution.
The President insisted that constitutional reform is necessary so that judges, magistrates and ministers are subject to the vote of citizens at the polls.
López Obrador addressed the issue when questioned about the appointment of former Minister Arturo Zaldívar as the future Coordinator of Policy and Government of the virtual President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum.
After describing him as a professional and first-rate lawyer, she recalled the way in which he fought nepotism while he was at the head of the Court.
“Attorney Arturo Zaldívar is a first-rate lawyer, he is a professional, he is knowledgeable about the law, very experienced, and when he was President of the Court he did everything possible to cleanse the Judiciary of corruption, nothing more than a very advanced cancer that requires a major intervention to be able to remove it, sanitize and cleanse that sick body.
“What I do know is that he, in his reports, spoke of corruption, which was very strange because all the previous presidents of the Court, and even less so now, did not speak of that subject and he began to speak of nepotism, because it seems that the DIF is ‘the Court of the family’, it is a family institution,” he said with a laugh.
On the other hand, the Chief Executive referred to the statements of Minister Juan Luis González Alcántara Carrancá, who asserted that the President decided to promote the reform of the Judicial Branch because he was upset by the ruling issued by the Court against the National Guard being attached to the Secretariat of National Defense (Sedena).
In response, López Obrador warned that what really bothers him is that judges let criminals go free.
“I heard one of these ministers, whose name is better forgotten, saying that what I am doing is a whim, that wanting to reform the judiciary is a whim because they did not accept that the National Guard belonged to the Defense and that is why I got angry.
“This minister claims that this is why I got upset. I am not upset about that, but because they have dedicated themselves to freeing alleged criminals and the judiciary is rotten, it needs reform,” he said.
