Three months remain until the celebration of the Zurich Seville Marathonwhich on February 23, 2025 will experience one of its most special and emotional editions ever, as it will blow out the candles of its 40th anniversary. And on the occasion of this anniversary, Jose Luis Sanz announced this Wednesday the expansion of the bib number quota by 2,000 more to thus beat the historical participation record of the race, raising the level to 14,000 runners.
With this objective, the Seville City Council wants to “respond to athletes from all over the world who have been on the waiting list since last August 12 so that they can enjoy the flattest marathon in Europe and one of the fastest in the world,” as explained by the mayor. It was, in fact, on August 12 when the traditional 12,000 bibs available were sold out (never before had they run out so far in advance) for the Zurich Marathon of Seville 2025, of which ABC de Seville is the official half, giving way to the list of wait.
To respond to that demand, This Wednesday the deadline opens so that another 2,000 athletes can register for the test. The new numbers will be assigned in strict order of the waiting list that exists in the official website of the event. The 14,000 participants who will be at the start of the Zurich Seville Marathon 2025 will surpass the historical record of 13,700 marathon runners reached in 2018.
With this decision by the City Council, many of those runners who arrived late to register and were left without a bib will now have the opportunity to enjoy and compete through the streets of Seville in one of the fastest marathons in the worldas witnessed by the times and the rain of records achieved in its last edition, which was also key for many athletes to apply directly from the Seville capital for their ticket for the Paris Olympic Games.
Other records already broken
The Seville marathon, one of the best in the world due to the benefits of its circuit and its meteorological conditions, slipped in among the six fastest in history with up to eleven national records broken and it became the event with the largest number of sub 2h10 and 2h15 athletes, and the second with sub 2h30 women of all time. By 2025 it has achieved other records, since there are 21% women registered (17% in the last edition) and more than half of foreign runners (53% compared to 47% in 2024).
The Ethiopian Deresa Geletanew record for the Seville event with 2.03:27, and his compatriot Azmera Gebru (2.22:13) are the last winners of a race that was born on March 10, 1985 with the victories of the Spanish Francisco Medina (2.21:23) and the American Wendy Harris (3.12:09). The Zurich Seville Marathon is an event organized by the Seville City Council with the collaboration of Sport Life Ibérica and the sponsorship of Asics and TotalEnergies.
