For many years LaLiga has been considered the best league in the world, and today it is undoubtedly still one of the 2 or 3 best according to opinions, and that has been partly thanks to teams like Barcelona or Real Madrid that with their budgets and players have made our league the best.
Players like Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo have improved our football, but Forlan or Agüero at Atlético de Madrid, Villa, Mata and Silva in that great Valencia or even the previous one that won the league, Sevilla and its historical milestones in the Europa League, and even teams like Celta, Deportivo de la Coruña, Villarreal among others, have made ours a more than notable competition and feared by Europe.
But the fact that these stories exist does not mean that there are not also some misfortunes for some clubs on the opposite side, and that is that if some teams win points, others have to lose them, and the league has had teams that have not been particularly brilliant. The difference in distributing the money, or what it means to move up from the second division to many clubs, is a world away and that is why some teams have had an unfortunate time in the Spanish first division with results that would be better to forget.
But beyond that, here we are going to remember them to see what have been the worst seasons of a club in the Spanish first division since the new measure of 3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 was adopted in the 95/96 season. for defeat:
Albacete Balompié, or as it was known by Spain in its great era, Queso Mecánico, is one of the historic teams of Spanish football, but the 04/05 season has undoubtedly been a stain on its journey through the first division Spanish. Despite Antonio Pacheco’s 13 goals, the team was not able to get out of last position, and the 6 victories they achieved were very little compared to the 10 that marked Mallorca’s salvation that year.
Nástic de Tarragona had just been promoted the previous season to the first division as second in the second division, but the team’s efforts were not enough to stay in a historic league with Milito’s Zaragoza or Sinama-Pongolle’s Recreativo de Huelva. Not even Portillo’s 11 goals were enough to rescue a terrible season, 7 points from second-to-last and 12 from salvation.
Sevilla has managed to establish itself as one of the most feared teams in the Europa League, but its start to the millennium was not the best, as it was relegated last in a league that everyone will remember for the victory of Super Depor. There were 12 goals by Juan Carlos that tried to avoid relegation, but they were not enough, and with only 5 victories, they were 17 points away from salvation as last.
This would be the last season that the Unión Deportiva Salamanca would step into the first division, and the 98/99 season was very hard for the Salamanca team. It was their second consecutive season in the first division, but their 7 victories were not enough for a year where they only relegated 2 directly, and they were last. Permanence, or at least the playoff to play it, was 9 points away.
A tough season for Racing de Santander, who after some glorious years in the first division with the Zigic-Munitis couple among other great players, found themselves at the bottom of the standings with only 4 wins in 38 games. 28 were the few goals from that squad for the 69 they received.
Levante did not have an easy season despite what their 7 victories say, and that is that they were 17 points away from permanence in a year where Güiza achieved the last Spanish top scorer in the Spanish first division with Mallorca.
There were eleven goals from Luis García that could not keep Murcia in the last league that Valencia managed to lift. At 16 points from safety, there was little the Murcians could do; with 5 wins they were already 4 less than nineteenth on the list.
Real Betis Balompié wants to be forgotten this season where the 19 goals scored by Jorge Molina and Rubén Castro were of no use. The team presented notable deficiencies in the defensive aspect that cost them relegation to 15 points from safety.
Elche’s last season is not pleasant to remember either, and they managed to win 5 games, but most of them were almost in the last month of the competition and already knowing that they had been relegated. The proof is that they did not lose any of the last 5 games, and even so, they were 16 points away from permanence.
The relegation that year for Espanyol was also very hard, since they were not only 12 points away from permanence. On matchday 28, with 10 matches left, they had only two points less than at the end of the season, and when they needed the points most, they did not go beyond 2 draws and 8 losses in the last 10 games.
Málaga was going through a terrible season that year, and not only because of the 16 points that separated them from salvation. When your top scorer only manages to score 6 goals in a season, there are few things you can do to avoid being last in the league.
The only team that repeats in this table and does so both times in the top 5 for worst historical results. Málaga once again suffered a terrible relegation that simulated that of 20 years before, this time with 4 points less. Five victories left 23 points of salvation in this case.
A year before Málaga, Granada already warned that this first division did not take prisoners and if it had to humiliate you it would do so. Four scant victories and 30 goals in 38 games were the records that made Granada the third worst team in the competition historically.
In second position in this table and last in their respective year, Córdoba left
in our retinas a season where with only 3 victories, they were 15 points away from salvation. As an exceptional fact, that year Elche dropped 41 points due to financial problems.
And the worst season in the history of the league goes to Sporting de Gijón. The Asturian team did not add more than 2 victories, and filled with draws and defeats a season that was completely forgotten just two seasons after the new scoring format. In this case they were 27 points away from being able to compete in the permanence playoff.
