This year’s salmon season in the Far East could be the worst in 12 years. The total catch will be 264 thousand tons. This is the forecast of scientists, said Albina Kanzeparova, head of the department of anadromous fish of Russia at the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography.
However, the specialist said, in recent years, the catch has almost always significantly exceeded forecasts. The exception is 2015 and 2020, writes IA PrimaMedia.
In 2020, about 300 thousand tons of Pacific salmon were harvested in the Far East. This year’s decline could be 12%. Odd years are considered “bad” years for salmon.
Usually the first place in catching red fish is in Kamchatka. It is expected that 137 thousand tons of salmon will be harvested there. Next come Sakhalin, Khabarovsk Territory, Magadan Region.
The catch of pink salmon this year is expected to be at the level of 2020 or even higher. The total result should be 150-200 thousand tons. The planned total catch of chum salmon is 90 thousand tons, which is at the level of 2021.
A decrease in sockeye salmon catches to the level of 30-32 thousand tons was observed in the last two years. This year will be no exception.
