The director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, in accordance with the advice of the IHR Emergency Committee, has determined that the “surgence” of the mpox “continues to constitute a public health emergency of international concern“.
The statements have been based on the increasing numbers and continued geographic spread of cases, the operational challenges on the ground and the need to organize and sustain a cohesive response between countries and partners.
This is what Tedros has stated after the meeting held this Friday by the Emergency Committee of the International Health Regulations (IHR 2005) before the resurgence of the epidemic from mpox. As reported by the WHO, a report of the meeting will be published next week, including the temporary recommendations issued by the director general to the States Parties to the IHR.
On August 14, 2024, the director declared for the first time the increase in mpox in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and its spread to neighboring countries as a public health emergency of international concern.
In Spain, they were counted from the Carlos III Health Institute, 67 new cases of this virus until August 2024, without any of them presenting significant changes in severity compared to those diagnosed since 2022.
