The WHO incorporates Minister Mónica García into its Executive Committee after 20 years without Spanish representatives

Spain once again forms part of the Executive Council of the World Health Organization (WHO) after twenty years. The Minister of Health, Mónica García, joins the governance body, made up of 34 members, as a representative of Europe, the Ministry reported in a statement this Thursday.

The incorporation was approved on October 30 at the annual meeting of the WHO Europe held in Copenhagen, although the information had not been made public until now “out of respect for the situation that was being experienced in the areas affected by DANA”, his team has justified.

The main function of the Executive Council, which meets twice a year, “is to implement the decisions and policies established by the Health Assembly, in addition to serving as an advisory body and facilitating its work.” The World Health Assembly is the main decision-making body of the WHO and is responsible for establishing public health policies at the global level. It also elects the Director General of the WHO and approves the budgets that allow the programs to be executed.

“This election represents recognition of Spain’s work in the field of public health and will allow it to actively participate in decision-making at a global level,” says the Ministry, which from this chair wants to promote issues such as “primary care as heart of health systems, care for professionals, the importance of climate change for health, the promotion of gender equity in health, work against childhood obesity through sports, healthy eating or social determinants of health.”
