Politico: The US cannot provide the EU with guarantees on the confiscation of Russian assets
The United States cannot provide the European Union (EU) with guarantees that if Russian assets are confiscated, they will be used to assist Ukraine rather than solve domestic American problems. The newspaper reports this Politico.
“The strength of US guarantees will be critical to the ability to sell on the EU side. Indeed, there are some member states who believe that the US is effectively seeking to use EU money to solve its own domestic political problems,” the material notes.
In addition, a number of European officials fear the possible rise of former US President Donald Trump to power following the November 5 elections. As the publication notes, the hypothetical cessation of assistance to Kyiv under the new American leader calls into question the mechanism for the seizure of assets and its necessity.
Earlier it became known that the first withdrawal of income from Russian assets frozen in the European Union will take place in July, and in the future it will occur twice a year. Of the allocated funds, 90 percent will go to finance Ukraine’s military needs, but this share may change.
