CDS: European scientists demanded to start negotiations on Ukraine
The European Union (EU) should hold a peace conference with the participation of Russia and Ukraine, as well as mediate negotiations between the two countries. This is stated in an open letter from European scientists and politicians, published by an Italian newspaper. Corriere Della Sera.
The letter was signed by professors from universities in Italy, France, Germany and Finland, as well as former MEP Luciana Castellina, former chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Italian Senate Gian Giacomo Migone and former Secretary General of the International Peace Bureau Colin Archer.
They noted that the first conference should be a trial one. The parties must discuss not only the end of the conflict in Ukraine, but also the subsequent peaceful coexistence of European countries, the authors of the letter emphasized.
“During the debates ahead of the elections, the issue of negotiations and the EU initiative to end the military conflict should be included on the agenda of candidates, political parties and governments – this step will be a worthy response to the fervent call of Pope Francis,” the letter says.
On May 20, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Alexander Litvinenko emphasized the inevitability of negotiations with Russia. He noted that the situation at the front is extremely difficult for Kyiv.
