With the dogsUnfortunately, it’s like clothes or names: they are victims of fashion. In the case of dogs, there are some breeds that become a trend, something that has been accentuated with the boom of social networks.
One of the most fashionable dogs is the french bulldogbut as sometimes happens, these companion dogs can have health problems that are very likely to manifest.
The People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA), the UK’s leading veterinary charity, warns that these dogs have a very high predisposition to suffer from a very painful disease: elbow fractures.
“Fractures can occur in French bulldogs with everyday accidents, clike a hard landing when jumping off the couch or tripping on a step, while in many other breeds, these injuries are usually only seen after a serious fall or trauma such as being hit by a car,” PDSA veterinarian Lynne James said in statements reported by the Daily Mail.
“All breeds have their own personalities and quirks, but it is important for owners to be aware of health problems that specific breeds may be prone to and the impact it will have if your pet becomes ill or injured,” adds James.
PDSA data shows that in total, 278 dogs underwent surgery for elbow fractures in 2023 in the UK. The curious thing is that 180 of these dogs were French bulldogs (almost 65%).
They are also more prone to pneumoniaa: “French bulldogs, along with other flat-faced (brachycephalic) breeds, are more prone to regurgitation and aspiration pneumonia due to the greater effort required to move air through their narrow airways, part of the condition known as brachycephalic airway obstruction syndrome,” the charity explains.
“For people considering sharing their lives with this adorable breed, we strongly recommend that you do plenty of research to understand the potential health and what this could mean for them“concludes the PDSA.
