This Thursday, June 6, was a key day in the Premier League as clubs voted on whether to continue using VAR, after Wolverhampton registered a petition to remove it. And the vote carried out at the Premier League’s annual general assembly finally resulted in favor of video refereeing.
VAR will remain in English football after only Wolves voted in favor of its elimination, while the rest of the clubs have voted in favor of maintaining VAR. However, even if video refereeing is maintained next season, changes will be made to it.

To eliminate VAR, the Wolves proposal would have needed the support of two-thirds of the clubs; That is, 14 votes in favor of the 20 clubs that make up the Premier.
“The clubs voted today in favor of continuing to use VAR in the Premier League. While VAR produces more accurate decision-making, it was agreed that improvements should be made for the benefit of the game and the fans,” the Premier announced to through a statement.
In its statement, the Premier highlighted that there are 6 points on which changes are planned to be introduced.
“As part of the ongoing work to improve VAR, six key areas were focused on in discussions with clubs:
1) Maintain a high threshold for VAR intervention to provide greater consistency and fewer interruptions to the flow of the game.
2) Reduce delays in play, primarily by introducing semi-automatic offside technology (SAOT) and maintaining a high threshold for VAR intervention.
3) Improve the fan experience by reducing delays, in-stadium referee announcements following a post-VAR decision change and, where possible, an improved offer of big screen replays to include all VAR interventions.
4) Work with PGMOL on implementing more robust VAR training to improve consistency, including an emphasis on process speed while preserving accuracy.
5) Increase transparency and communication around VAR, including expanded communications from the Premier League Match Center and through broadcast programming such as “Match Officials Mic’d Up”.
6) The implementation of a VAR communication campaign for fans and interested parties, which will seek to further clarify the role of VAR in the game to participants and fans.
