The Valencia housing movement camps after this Saturday’s demonstration: “If we don’t have a house, we will occupy the square”

The protest for the right to decent housing, against speculation and tourism in Valencia leads to a camping trip in the center of the city. Dozens of people spent Saturday night in the Plaza del Ayuntamiento in the Valencian capital in a spontaneous protest that followed the massive demonstration.

The protesters, many of them from the student movement and the university camps for Palestine, call on the rest of the neighbors to unite and collaborate this Sunday. At 12 noon, the Acampada València movement has organized talks and banner workshops and at 6 p.m. an open assembly to organize new protests.

With the motto “if we don’t have a house, we will occupy the square”, the protesters of the first housing encampment in Spain demand solutions to housing problems: unbridled tourism, rising rental prices, real estate speculation and protection of the territory. In a statement released by the Entre Barris platform, which brings together neighborhood entities in Valencia, the organizers ask for food, hygiene products and batteries for cell phones to be able to continue camping and “give continuity to the demand.” Saturday’s protest brought together nearly 50,000 people, according to the organization, in one of the largest marches in memory, with echoes of 15M.
