The United States authorities have arrested a researcher of Indian nationality at the University of Georgetown, accused of spreading propaganda of the Hamas Islamist group and “promoting anti -Semitism” in social networks, within the framework of the persecution of the proper voices in the academic field that has begun the administration of Donald Trump, protected by their controversial policies.
The researcher, Badar Khan Suri, was arrested last Monday, As reported on Thursday the newspaper The Washington Post citing their lawyers. Suri has been transferred to a detention center in Alexandria, in the state of Louisiana, where he hopes to appear before an immigration court, according to his lawyers, who have filed a lawsuit asking to be released.
For her part, the spokeswoman for the National Security Department, Tricia McLaughlin, has written in the social network X that Suri is “an exchange student” in Georgetown, who “actively spread Hamas propaganda and promoted anti -Semitism in social networks” and “has narrow links” with a “known or suspected terrorist of Hamas.”
According to the website of the University of Georgetown, Suri, which is in the US with a student visa, “it is an interdisciplinary academic whose areas of interest are religion, violence and peace; ethnic conflicts and peace processes in the Middle East and South Asia.”
Suri’s arrest has produced just over a week after US immigration authorities stopped a former Palestinian study from Columbia University, Mahmoud Khalil.
Khalil, a propalestine activist who has a residence permit in the North American country and has led student and intermediate protests to try Columbia cutting ties with Israel, was arrested on March 8 and also remains detained in Louisiana after a federal judge temporarily blocked the deportation order issued by the Trump government.
Trump himself has accused Khalil and other activists who have mobilized in favor of Palestine to participate in proterrorist, anti -Semitic and anti -stating activities.
