Yesterday, the UAE welcomed the Security Council’s adoption of Resolution No. 2730, regarding the protection of humanitarian workers and United Nations employees, which the state co-sponsored, noting that they provide life-saving assistance to civilians in all conflicts, including the Gaza Strip.
The Permanent Mission of the UAE to the United Nations said on the “X” platform: “We welcome the Security Council’s adoption of Resolution No. 2730, which the UAE co-sponsored, regarding the protection of humanitarian workers and United Nations employees.”
She added: “Humanitarian workers provide life-saving assistance to civilians in all conflicts, including the Gaza Strip, where Palestinians suffer from a catastrophic humanitarian situation, as a result of the Israeli war on Gaza. Civilians and humanitarian workers must be permanently protected.”
In the Arab Group’s meeting with the press yesterday, Ambassador Mohammed Abu Shehab, Permanent Representative of the UAE Mission to the United Nations, in his capacity as Chairman of the Group for the month of May, stressed the need to protect civilians, humanitarian workers, and United Nations staff.
The group also condemned all attacks on civilians in Gaza, and the serious violations committed by the Israeli occupation forces against the Palestinians, while reaffirming the group’s priorities of an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the delivery of humanitarian aid on a large scale, urgently, completely, and without obstacles. They also stressed their rejection of any attempts at forced displacement.
The Arab Group also welcomed the temporary measures issued by the International Court of Justice yesterday, especially with regard to the immediate cessation of Israeli military operations in Rafah, stressing the need for Israel to implement all temporary measures issued by the Court without delay.
In a previous session of the Arab Group before the Security Council, Ambassador Muhammad Abu Shehab stressed that the horrific situation in Gaza is a direct result of the Israeli attacks against civilians, humanitarian workers, and civilian infrastructure, and of the stifling restrictions imposed on the entry of humanitarian aid and commercial supplies.
He added: “The current situation has caused an unprecedented rise in levels of food insecurity and has exposed more than half a million Palestinians to famine, as Israel continues to use starvation as a weapon of war.”
He continued, “What makes the situation even more horrific in the Gaza Strip is the targeting of humanitarian workers, making the Gaza Strip the most dangerous place on earth for these heroes who risk their lives to provide relief to those in need. These attacks have reached a very dangerous stage, as they have affected aid convoys and the headquarters of humanitarian organizations, including the UNRWA headquarters in Jerusalem.” Occupied East.
Abu Shehab stressed that such repeated attacks constitute a flagrant violation of international law and require an immediate and transparent investigation to hold those responsible accountable.
