The United Arab Emirates affirmed its commitment to continue providing relief aid to Sudan via the air bridge to face the repercussions of the flood disaster, and indicated that tangible progress in the political process is still possible under specific conditions.
In a statement she delivered before the UN Security Council session on the United Nations Integrated Mission to Support the Transitional Phase in Sudan (UNITAMS), Amira Al-Hafeiti, Deputy Permanent Representative of the State to the United Nations, confirmed the UAE’s continued commitment to providing relief aid through the air bridge recently launched by the state to support the afflicted. The statement called on the international community to intensify its support for Sudan to alleviate the plight of those affected, stressing the importance of international donors reviewing their recent decisions, which would prevent the collapse of the Sudanese economy and help it recover.
In the midst of the continuing search for a clear way out of the current political situation, and despite the accumulation of challenges facing Sudan, we believe that making tangible progress in Sudan is still possible and requires serious support from the international community.
With regard to developments regarding the efforts of the “tripartite mechanism”, the statement referred to the Security Council meeting on June 8, which stressed the importance of the inclusiveness of the dialogue for all Sudanese factions with the aim of reaching a sustainable agreement. It also referred to the Council meeting on June 9, which aimed to bring the parties closer Consideration, stressing that it is a necessary and inevitable step to enhance the national interest, give precedence to the language of reason and wisdom, and overcome differences for the benefit of the brotherly Sudanese people.
On the decision of the Sovereignty Council and the military institution to withdraw from the negotiations, the statement said: “We hope that the military institution’s announcement of its withdrawal from the negotiations sponsored by the tripartite mechanism will contribute to reaching a consensus between the political forces regarding the formation of a government of national competencies, and as we mentioned earlier, the Sudanese ownership of the political process is considered essential to ensure the success of the transitional phase.
As for the security situation, the UAE’s statement before the Security Council considered that the national mechanisms in Sudan are important to calm tensions, such as Sudan’s sponsorship of a number of local peace agreements related to the clashes between tribes in West and South Darfur.
He said: “Despite the limited support Sudan received regarding the completion of the implementation of the Juba Peace Agreement, it was able to achieve remarkable progress in the security arrangements in Darfur, which were embodied, for example, in the efforts of the Permanent Ceasefire Committee and the recent graduation of the first batch of joint security forces. We recall here that the current period requires the international community to intensify its efforts and provide technical and financial support so that Sudan can make more progress, ensuring the restoration of stability throughout Darfur.
At the conclusion of the statement, the UAE affirmed its support for the aspirations of the Sudanese people, reiterating its commitment to Sudan’s sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and national unity.
